Summary on Grant Application Form
Future broadband wireless networks will operate at microwave frequencies, which cannot efficiently be distributed within buildings and the urban environment using conventional microwave feeders. The passive integrated picocell (PIP) concept distributes these signals through optical fibre as microwave modulated optical signals, with a combined detector/modulator at each base station to provide a transceiver radio path. Initial demonstrations of the concept have used conventional waveguide electro-absorption modulators, which require active fibre alignment, have high (<10 dB) optical insertion loss and have a non-linear modulation characteristic. This project will develop a passive integrated picocell system using specially designed linearised multiple quantum well (MQW) asymmetric Fabry-Perot modulator/detectors, integrated with microstrip antennas to obtain reduced link loss and high linearity with simple interfaces to both antenna and optical fibre, the first time this technology has been applied to microwave systems. Detailed studies of linearity, loss and noise performance will be carried out in support of the systems objectives. Operation without applied electrical bias and temperature compensation will also be considered.
