Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to perform angularly-resolved measurements of the translational, rotational and vibrational energy disposal following collisions of selected molecules from a narrow-velocity pulsed molecular beam source with chemically reactive surfaces. The surfaces will be III-V semi-conductor materials (GaAs, InP) and the molecular species will be halogen molecules or hydrogen halides. Laser-induced fluorescence and REMPI detection will be employed to identify the species and determine their internal state distributions following scattering from the surface in a range of processes including inelastic scattering, trapping-desorption and reaction. These studies will be coupled with time-of-flight measurements performed using mass spectrometry.Using the principle of detailed balance, these measurements will also allow the determination of sticking coefficients of several key species as a function of translational, vibrational and rotational energy, surface temperature and scattering angle. Studies at this level of detail for gas-surface reactive interactions will be unique. They will represent a significant advance in our knowledge of the dynamics of gas-surface collisions in complex reactive systems
