Summary on Grant Application Form
The performance of a complete steel structure under fire conditions is considerably better than that of its members in isolation. and this has led the steel industry to promote the use of unprotected or partially protected steel structures. There is an urgent need to develop greater understanding on the whole building behaviour under fire conditions. Fire tests on structural assemblies are very rare due to lack of facilities to perform such tests. This proposal intends to use the unique fire testing facilities, in conjunction with a number of theoretical models. all available at the University of Manchester. to conduct a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study on the performance of steel and composite columns restrained by surrounding structural members. This project will complement the EPSRC sponsored study on restrained beams in fire (GR/L/41776) and the recently completed large scale structural fire tests in the steel framed building at Cardington. Keywords describing areas of proposal.restrainedrestrained columns. structural interaction, moment transfer, boundary conditions. whole building behaviour. fire resistance. steel and composite columns
