Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of this proposal is to develop innovative new routes to transition metal sulfides via CVD and Sol-gel processes. Initial studies will focus on the development of some homoleptic transition a metal thiolates of the type M(SR)n (M= Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb, Mo) and the formation of heterobimetallic thiolate derivatives, e.g. MM(SR)n (SR)m. The growth of metal sulphide and mixed-metal sulfide films, from M(SR)n and M(SR)n(SR)m respectively will be studied using CVD methodology. The films we be investigated by XPS, SEM/EDAX, glancing angle-XRD, reflectance and absorbance measurements. In addition, the formation of transition metal sulfides using a novelthiol Sol-Gel technique involving the reaction of a metal precursor (e.g. thiolate or amide) with excess thiol (e.g. tBuSH) or hydrogen sulfide in a non-hydroxylic solvent (e.g. toluene) will be investigated.
