Summary on Grant Application Form
There are many applications which, although computationally intensive, are rarely parallelised, because they are based on complex data structures which make explicit parallelisation difficult. This project will explore a promising approach to automatic parallelisation of such applications. The key idea is to use an underlying execution model, called SLAM, which combines efficient grain local behaviour with coarse grain global behaviour. The project involves compiling SLAM code from UFO, an object-oriented language designed for parallel execution. The target machine is a virtual shared memory multiprocessor. The implementation will initially be tested on small programs with well understood characteristics, and evaluated on larger applications towards the end of the project.
