Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to evaluate switched reluctance generators for wind energy systems in the medium power range and in particular direct drive systems. The preliminary investigation will be a design optimisation concentrating on the following:1) Outline designs of a direct drive switched reluctance generator rated at 20 kW.2) Detailed electromagnetic design to optimise output and efficient at all speeds.3) Mechanical design to minimise acoustic noise and vibration.4) Control strategy for maximum power conversion at all speeds and the effect of transients.5) Cost. From the results of the design optimisation a prototype will be built and tested in the laboratory. In addition a switched reluctance generator that may be used in a geared system will also be tested. In both cases performance will be measured with the emphasis on the parameters used in the design optimisation of the direct drive system and a comparison between the two will be made. Finally conclusions will be drawn regarding the suitability of switched reluctance generators for wind energy systems compared to existing technology. It is hoped that this work will lead to further investigation at higher power levels in excess of 100kW.
