Summary on Grant Application Form
We will develop models for plastic zones around crack tips in multi-phase materials. Current models will be extended to two and three dimensions. The main focus will be on the behaviour of secondary (carbide) cracks in the plastic zone and their propagation into the matrix. We will model the effects of plastic flow in the crack tip plastic zone and local plastic flow around brittle particles on the fracture propagation into the matrix. Modelling will be done for a range of temperatures, strain rates and carbide sizes and positions. The overall aim is to understand and predict parameters used in the continuum models, especially the Weibull stress for fracture transmission into the matrix from a brittle particle. A project student will perform experimental work to underpin the modelling, determining conditions for carbide fracture and fracture transmission into the matrix.
