Summary on Grant Application Form
The understanding of light propagation in liquid crystal displays is essential to the development of the technology. Whether this is the continued improvement of current approaches to the use of liquid crystals to switch light, or the testing of novel ideas for high efficiency display devices, the theory of interaction between light and the structures which form in the liquid crystal materials is highly important. It is the aim of this programme to develop sophisticated modelling which will be of use to the liquid crystal display community. This will use the techniques of the Vector Beam Propagation Method (VBPM) and Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method to tackle the problem of light propagation in liquid crystal structures. The methods are well established in the field of integrated optics, but we will extend them to determine the optical effects of complex structures in liquid crystals. This will then be used to study structures such as the edges of pixels, and also novel modes of liquid crystal display operation (such as the axially symmetric mode). We also aim to use this understanding to further develop liquid crystal display modes for enhanced viewing quality (viewing angle, contrast, light efficiency, etc.)
