Summary on Grant Application Form
Although storage can be used for a number of purposes in the power system, it is likely to be most cost effective as a means of supporting the voltage of critical high value loads during systems voltage distortions and sags. These system voltage distortions may originate wither from faults on the utility power system or from customer loads. Static VAr Compensators (SVCs) can be used to provide some voltage support but, as they have a very limited real power storage capability, cannot provide support during sustained three-phase sags. In order to provide complete voltage support some energy storage system is required. The project will investigate the use of lead acid batteries and advanced power converters to provide real power injection to improve customers power quality. The project is multi-disciplinary with colleagues from the Chemistry Department and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics. The methodologies used will include analysis, computer simulation and the construction and testing of hardware models.
