Ninety percent of the leather in this country (and worldwide) is tanned used chromium sulphate. The chromium salts left in the spent tanning baths are precipitated using alkali and filter-pressed into and oxide cake which is disposed in landfill sites. In addition, after tanning, the hides are shaved to approximately fifty percent of their original thickness and the shavings also sent for landfill. We propose too recover the chromium form these tow sources and incorporate it into an NZP-type structure with other metals, in order to develop a new range of ceramic pigments. We propose to examine the leach-resistance of Cr from these molecules with a view to their use as colorants in the ceramics, plastics and construction industries.
