Most of the work that has been published on the experimental observation of space sharge in insulators has been obtained for samples stressed under DC conditions at maderate feilds (approx 10kV/mm). We propose to use fast pulse repetition techniques (several kHz, several kV) to make measurements of space charge distributions on highly stresse AC samples wil sufficient time resolution to allow measurements to be made throughout the cycle. Using the pulsed electo-acoustic technique, space charge dynamics may be observed over extended periods of time, indeed aging mey be observed. Data analysis and modelling computer programs will be adapted for use with AC excitation. Since power distribution is mostly AC, the propose developments are directly relevant to most of the UK HV insulation industry as space sharge dynamics ander AC conditions are not well understood. There is also a desire to push towards higher feilds; this is tainted with relucance to exceed levels at which new degradation mechanisms may become active. This programme will allow co-operation with UK industry in the characterisation of cable and other insulators in terms of charge injection, charge mobilities and trapping under AC conditions.
