Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to investigate the use of TlF in the processing of thick films of Tl-1223 by the process first demonstrated by Tachikawa. This process offers a simple one-step method for the synthesis of patterned high current conductors using very simple ceramic screen printing techniques. The most appropriate technical ceramic substrates, the reaction pathways and optimised synthesis protocols and the large area uniformity of the Tl-1223 will all be investigated in order to fabricate robust high current tracks. These structures will then be studied for application as resistive fault current limiters. A design for a 240v/70 A ac device operating in liquid nitrogen has been specified and will be implemented in Tl-1223. We intend to study the positions of the failure sites under current overstressing, the recovery times from the normal state and the resistance to permanent damage on a number of different substrate materials and to investigate the effect of the self field generated in novel spiral conductor geometries on the switching behaviour.
