Energy saving by Process Integration of conventional distillation columns often gives limited benefits. These limitations can be overcome by using non-conventional designs. One of the most significant of these is the dividing wall column, which involves themal coupling. It has been established that when a dividing wall column can be applied, energy savings of 30% are typical. Further a dividing wall column can in new designs save up to 30% capital cost compared with conventional arrangements. Although designers have been aware for may years of the improved energy efficiency possible with dividing wall columns, such designs have not been widely used because of fear of control problems. New methids have recently been established which optimise the design for minimum energy consumption and allow initialisation of rigorous simulations. Futher the control of dividing walls has been studies theoretically at UMIST and validation has been based on using Pilot Plant distillation column of 0.3m diameter and 10.5m length. The control schemes studied so far indicate that the dividing wall column can indeed be controlled sucessfully, but further work is required, bringing together the design and control aspects, before the full potential of dividing wall columns can be established. This equipment bad is concerned with the upgrade of the computer control of the plant to allow advanced contol, start-up and dynamic simulation studies to be carried, but such developments have wider implications for the general health of the Pilot Plant itself.
