String Theory is a promising theory of quantum gravity. I propose to explore the mathematical structure of string theory with the aim of illuminating the fundamentally new formulation of the theory towards which recent progress in duality is leading. I will study the still somewhat mysterious M-theory that is central to stringdualities. I will pursue this by examining the properties of the membranes and fivebranes of the theory and the new Matrix Theory. I will also use D-branes as tools to test various duality conjectures by constructing D-brane bound states. D-branes will also be used to study the quantum mechanics of black holes by comparing semi-classical dynamics of black holes with perturbative D-brane results. I also propose to investigate duality in quantum field theory by studying the mathematical properties of monopoles in various supersymmetric gauge theories. Intersecting branes will be used to analyse three-dimensional field theories. I will further investigate spacetime aspects of D-brane physics and other issues in quantum gravity by continuing my work on the pair creation of black holes.
