Solid-liquid mixing is required in a number of chemical processes to produce uniformity, promote heat and mass transfer, initiate or assist chemical reactions and to support aggregation or disaggregation. In many of these operations, the total mass of particles and their size changes with time as a result of mass transfer, chemical reaction, attrition and agglomeration. The yield of these processes depends upon the balance between these different mechanisms which take place simultaneously and depend on the mixing mode. A better knowledge of the solid-liquid flows involved would allow considerable energy savings through a reduced and more efficient use of the power input and improved control of the operation. The proposed work will provide a major and much needed contribution to the existing body of knowledge by utilising refractive-index matching techniques. With this method, the refractive indices of the carrier fluid and of the dispersed particles are matched so that the suspension remains transparent at high solid concentration, allowing unobtrusive measurements of velocity, particle size, concentration and flow visualisation to be made.
