Raman spectroscopy is finding increasing use in the analysis of the structure and deformation of a wide range of non-metallic materials such as polymers, ceramics and semiconductors. One of the main drawbacks of the technique is that, for a number of important materials laser-induced fluorescence is stronger than the Raman scattering making it difficult to obtain a Raman spectrum. Renishaw plc has recently developed a novel low power 780 nm diode laser for use with its Raman microscope. At this wavelength of excitation, fluorescence problems experienced with many materials at shorter wavelengths are overcome. A request is made for partial (49%) funding to support the purchase of a Renishaw near infrared Raman microscope system to be used in the analysis of the structure and deformation of a wide range of materials including high-performance polymer fibres and composites, and ceramics. The instrument will complement the facilities that are presently available for Raman spectroscopy in the UMIST/University of Manchester Materials Science Centre and so improve the research infrastructure. It will also be available for research workers from both the Manchester campus and from other universities in the UK and abroad.
