Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is a combined experimental and theoretical study of the interaction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with fluids. The programme of investigation includes:1. Studying the surface wave-spatially localised liquid interaction;2. Theoretical analysis of the wetting liquid-acoustic wave interaction;3. Investigation of the partial to complete wetting transition. A simultaneous optical profiling and SAW system will be constructed capable of operating at a 1GHz frequency so providing a fundamental length scale of the order of a micron. High quality information obtained on the resonant transmission and reflection of surface waves by dynamically evolving and spatially localised fluids will provide a solid foundation for a parallel theoretical investigation. Standard analytical and numerical methods developed for acoustic wave propagation in anisotropic and inhomogenous solids will be used. The transition between wetting regimes will be achieved through silanisation of inorganic surfaces using self-assembled monolayers thus enabling the polarisation of the surface to be controlled.
