Summary on Grant Application Form
The stability of flow in a channel and pipe with compliant walls will be investigated using a combination of analytical/numerical methods. A detailed study will be carried out to investigate and classify the expected new modes of instability for a general compliant wall model. Secondly, the role of instability theory in fully developed turbulent flows will be investigated. Some preliminary work suggests that organised disturbances in a turbulent boundary layer can become unstable. This finding needs to be more fully substantiated, and the analysis extended to other flow situations.
