Summary on Grant Application Form
Hydroxyapatite has poor mechanical properties, limiting its use to non load bearing situations. A method has been established to dramatically improve the mechanical properties to a level where the composite may be considered for load bearing applications. The work up to now has examined the role of the glass on mechanical properties of the composite, but the processing route has not been optimised and will be a way of further improving the mechanical properties, particularly the fracture toughness. The proposal aims at investigating and optimising the way that the glass is incorporated into HA and also to examine in detail the sintering method and regime. Processing has so far only used uniaxial pressing at ambient temperatures, but it is proposed that a high temperature pressing technique could be successfully employed to improve the mechanical characteristics. Furthermore, the low firing temperatures that will be required will also limit any phase inversions that may occur, thus producing a new range of strong and bioactive ceramics for medical use.
