Summary on Grant Application Form
To develop theoretical methods and computer codes to describe the interaction between short intense laser pulses (pulse lengths greater than about 200 fsec, intensities from 10**11 to 10**14 W/cm**2) and inert gas atoms and their ions. Comparisons between ab-initio calculations based on Direct R-Matrix-Floquet theory, simpler theoretical models and experiments will be carried out. The objective will be to stimulate and interpret experiments and to provide information required in the modelling of laser-produced plasmas. Studies on relativistic effects in heavy atoms will be carried out. The computer codes will be developed to run on the most advanced massively parallel distributed memory computers.Later stages of the programme will include the extension of the theory and computer codes to treat short pulse higher intensity (>10**14 W/cm**2) laser fields by taking account of time-dependent effects for multi-electron atoms. Work will also be carried out to study harmonic generation processes with possible applications to work on the development of coherent x-ray sources.
