Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a need to develop techniques for predicting the subsurface distributions of potentially toxic halogenated solvents, such as trichloroethene, in the Permo-Triassic Sandstone aquifer, so that optimal methods for remediation can be adopted. Through laboratory, modeling and field studies of solvent transport processes, such as a pore-entry pressure, residual saturation, dissolution and diffusion, the study will improve our understanding of the transport halogentated solvents in the aquifer. Laboratory and modeling results will be compared with observations from a contaminated site to investigate the scaling-up of laboratory data in-situ conditions and to establish generic relationships between aquifer characteristics and in-situ behavior of halogenated solvents. Generic laboratory baseline information, to be held on a publicly accessible database, will be of use in the prediction and delimitation of subsurface contamination and will assist in the development of more efficient and cost effective site assessment and remediation.
