The programme aims to establish design methods for large modular machines in which the structure is based on segments rather than complete circular components. This will remove the limits to development imposed by the limited availability large-diameter machine tools, by transport restrictions and by the capacity of mobile cranes. Wind turbine generators of any power capacity could be assembled using common rotor and stator modules assembled into formed into arc shaped subassemblies for transport and lifting.Following an initial exploratory phase using existing design software, 2D magnetic FE software will be used to investigate the influence of the segmental configuration on electrical performance. 3D software will be used to investigate the forces likely to be encountered at various stages of the assembly. Structural FE studies will investigate the structural distortions resulting from the magnetic forces and will be used to establish reasonable design criteria. A laboratory test structure will be used to validate the theoretical investigations and to investigate the accuracy of construction achievable with simple laser-cut flat profiles.
