This proposal is for continuing funding to develop and expand the large programme of research in the materials Science Centre led by Prof Young concerned with the use of Raman Spectroscopy to understand the fundamental deformation processes in fibres and composites. The methodology to be employed depends upon the new well-established finding that the wavenumber of the bands in the Raman spectra of most high-performance fibres shift significantly under the application of stress or strain. This phenomenon can be used to relate the macroscopic deformation of the fibres to molecular deformation processes. Moreover, since the laser beam in a Raman microscope system can be focused to a small spot it can also be employed to measure the local stress in a fibre in a composite under any general state of stress. Raman microscopy will be used to follow the deformation behaviour of new high-performance polymer fibres and in addition complex composite structures such as particulate, cross-ply, woven and knitted composites will be investigated. The proposed programme is in close collaboration with a scientific instrument manufacturer and with a user of composite materials in the UK, who are in an excellent position to exploit the results of the research.
