In the proposed research we will investigate the influence of alloying and the absorption of modifying species on the structure and propitious of fuel cell electrocatalysts. In particular we will study the effects of such variations in particle formulation on the response of the fuel cell to; 1) the poisoning of hydrogen oxidation catalysts by the presence of trace carbon monoxide in the fuel stream, 2) the effect of carbon dioxide build-up on methanol oxidation reaction, and 3) the crossover of methanol on the oxygen reduction reaction. The behavior of the supported metal particles will be primarily investigated using conventional electrochemical techniques (such as polarization studies) and dynamic extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). In order to conduct the dynamic EXAFS studies, we will develop the dynamic EXFAS techniques, quick EXFAS and dispersive EXFAS, for the in situ study of fuel cell electrocatalysts. Tow experimental protocols will be established; chrono EXAFS in which a sudden change to the system is made and the EXFAS spectra are recorded as a function of time after the change and dynamic EXFAS in which slow variation to the system I made and the EXFAS data collected in real time.
