Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will provide high resolution and angle-resolved photoemission measurements from complex perovskites and layered perovskites showing a range of properties, including GMR, superconductivity and useful catalytic behaviour.A series of flagship experiments will be undertaken to demonstrate the resolution capabilities of a new high resolution angle-resolving spectrometer being constructed at Daresby as part of a three-way collaboration between UMIST, Daresbury Laboratory and VG Microtech (funded under the Joint Research Equipment Initiative). Used in combination with line 5D, a routinely attainable combined (monochromator + analyser) resolution of 10-15 meV will allow highly internationally competitive bandmapping at and close to Fermi surface on doping AF insulating planes with holes, study the effect of doping on temperature induces spin transitions and use resonant photoemission at high resolution to speciate the character of the stated introduced by chemical doping. This will be related to changes in surface reactivity induced by doping, as probed by adsorption experiments using small molecules.
