Many key issues in evolution and ecology can only be resolved by an understanding of stochastic processes with spatially continuous state space. The project will develop a new class of models of interactions of individuals and genes reproducing in continuous populations that balance the need for biological relevance with mathematical tractability. Our models correspond to a modification of spatial branching processes in which reproductive success is regulated by local density. An approximation for variation in gene frequency and for genealogical structure will then be sought. Such general theoretical results will be applied to biological problems including: estimation of rates of migration from genetic variation; the structure of genealogies sampled from natural populations; the regulation of population density in continuous habitats; and the origin and spread of new gene combinations/
