Summary on Grant Application Form
A range of enhanced properties have been observed by processing materials in such a way as to reduce grain sizes to 30nm or less. Of all the processing techniques available for the production of such nanocrystalline materials, electrodeposition provides the simplest, the cheapest and that which is closest to existing and well established industrial processing methods. This project will investigate the electrodeposition of a number of metals and alloys, and characterise the materials produced using the high spatial resolution techniques of field-ion microscopy and atom probe microanalysis. The objectives are: to investigate the effect of processing parameters on the grain structure and nanometre-scale chemistry of electrodepostied materials, to elucidate the critical aspects of microstructure which control the enhanced and `anomalous' of nanocrystalline materials, to evaluate the technique of electrodeposition as a processing method to produce nanostructured engineering alloys with enhanced properties.
