Summary on Grant Application Form
Graded index polymer optical fibre has been developed to the point where its use in high bit rate connections either in or to the home is attracting a high level of industrial interest. Inexpensive modulators, switches etc., will be required for the large scale implementation of these applications. This proposal concentrates on the development of non-linear optical chromophores and polymers containing them for the realisation of high speed switches for use in polymethylmethacrylate POF networks. The chromophores will be based on the highly non-linear zwitterionic chromophores previously developed in Durham. They are designed to provide the necessary optical transparency at 650nm, the target operating wavelength, and improved stability to provide the necessary in service lifetime. Acrylate polymers with the chromophores incorporated as pendant groups will be prepared and characterised. The incorporation of these nlo materials into POF will be explored by computer modelling and selected examples will be fabricated and tested. Collaboration with BICC Cables will provide guidance for the direction of the work and access to characterisation and modelling facilities for the high speed networks incorporating the prototype devices.
