The project will explore a novel application for capacitance sensing, using linear arrays of electrodes that are fabricated on the surface of custom silicon chips. Sensing circuitry will be integrated directly underneath the electrodes in order to reduce the effects of stray capacitance. The resulting prototype will demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the position and velocity of droplets, as small as 10 microns in diameter, that are dispersed in a gas stream. Only one droplet will be in the vicinity of the array at any time. The application is of significance to the oil industry. Constraints on circuit design are closely related to those for Electrical Capacitance Tomogrophy, which has achieved considerable success largely due to the efforts of the team at UMIST. Finite element simulations will guide the design of the electrode array and sensing circuitry and fabricated chips will be tested in a laboratory environment to deduce the feasibility of implementing an industrial system.
