Summary on Grant Application Form
In offshore oil production, emulsion formation gives rise to various operational problems. Little is known about interactions in field oil/water emulsions given the wide variability of crude oil composition from field to field. This project has the aim of understanding the ways in which oil composition affects emulsion stability with an ultimate objective of developing a strategy for reduction of the ill-effects associated with emulsion. Shear flow, phase separation under dynamics conditions, and effectiveness of chemical demulsifiers will be studied.
