Intensive processing is an emerging technology applied to many industrial processes aiming at reducing the size of equipment needed and improving energy efficiency and process/product quality. Heat exchangers are extensively used in the process industry, accounting for a high capital expenditure and a large proportion of industrial energy use. The proposed investigation sets out to examine the effect of induced flow pulsations on the efficiency and performance of heat exchangers. The mean flow, turbulence and spectral characteristics of staggered and in-line tube bundle heat exchangers will be studied under pusatile flow conditions using flow visualisation and LDA techniques. The effects of driving frequencies and amplitudes of flow pulsations as well as that of Reynolds number on the measured quantites will be investigated. Finally, the heat transfer coefficients will be determined using thermocouple and liquid crystal thermographic techniques and design guidelies will be established for heat transfer enhancement. The proposed investigation is of considerable fundamental and industrial interest: it will improve our understanding of pulsatile flows in tube bundle heat exchangers and provide accurate data and guidelines for the design and operation of more efficient heat exchangers.
