Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to establish and operate a National Service (DARTS - Daresbury Analytical Research and Technology Service) in advanced X-ray techniques using synchrotron radiation at CCLRC's Daresbury SRS. The Service will use up to a total of 60 days p.a. of beamtime on Powder Diffraction, X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS), and Small-/Wide- Angle Scattering stations. Users will be able to send samples by post and obtain various levels of service, from provision of data only, through a simple first-level analysis, to full analysis with complete structural determination. The facilities at the SRS are unique in the UK and DARTS will provide a quick and simple way for researchers to access these advanced techniques without having to become expert practitioners in their use, analysis or interpretation: the Service staff will proved this. DARTS will thus be ideal for those unfamiliar with the methods and needing occasional use only.We propose that most of the available time will be allocated by a Management Committee meeting twice-yearly, but that a small amount of time should be made available for quick access on application to the Service Director, who will report the use of such time to the Management Committee.
