Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is sought to provide a Brewster angle microscope for investigations of the properties and molecular organisational processes of thin films by the soft matter scientific community. The microscope will be used for in-situ measurements simultaneously with neutron reflectivity, the combination of which will provide detailed information about the lateral in-plane structure together with the accurate determination of the depth profile. A short period of neutron beam time is necessary to demonstrate and explore the full potential of this combination of techniques.Experiments in three key areas air-liquid, air-solid, liquid-liquid interfaces will be performed. After this initial commissioning phase the Brewster angle microscope will be made available as a user facility open to a diverse research community as a powerful complementary technique to neutron reflectivity.
