Summary on Grant Application Form
The novel design of the proposed detector will revolutionise the way in which powder diffraction data is collected. Powder patterns are usually collected by scanning a narrow slit through a range of angles by stepping and counting. This produces a pattern with high angular resolution but it is very slow. For the first time we have a design that combines a very high rate photon counting capability with high angular resolution. The detector will collect a wide angular range of data at high resolution and will give gain factors in data collection times that will exceed 1000.A particularly novel feature of the detector will be the ability to vary its angular range and resolution to suit the particular scientific application. The detector is well matched to in-situ studies such as: zeolite and cement synthesis; hydrothermal reactions; catalytic reactions; drug synthesis and polymorphism; ceramics; oxide growth; phase diagrams; sol-gel systems; synthetic polymers; polymer electrolytes; bio-materials; gas hydrates; electrode surfaces and industrial processing. These applications are described in Appendix II.The detector is equally applicable in laboratory based systems and will enable high resolution data to be collected on the same time scales as current Bragg-Brentano patterns.
