This project is concerned with technological support for business needing to adapt to a rapidly changing external environment. When business is undergoing change, it must be helped to preserve those parts of their business that are most valuable to them. What is needed is an abstract description of the business and its processes, in which those areas that can be changed are indicated, together with how they can be changed, and the values of the various parts of the business are clearly assessed. We will achieve this by bringing together a number of currently separate developments in software systems engineering. We will base our work on established methods for modelling current business processes, both organisational and technical processes, adding to these the recent developments in object orientated frameworks and software product lines to show areas of potential change. We will add values to aspects of the business process using patterns and metrics. The model of the current process documents the business legacy - the high value parts of this are the business heritage, that part of the legacy worth preserving. We will develop our approach in close liaison with commercial practice and needs, guided by a steering committee and using real industrial case studies to guide the research and evaluate solutions.
