Low cost, light weight miniature head mounted display systems require application specific fixed legend emissive displays with high efficiency. Presently, micro-mirror LETFEL displays can provide luminances of 3000fL. However, potential markets need at least 5000fL. By maximising both the transmission of lateral emission to the micro-mirror and the reflection of this light away from the mirror surface higher brightness displays can be fabricated. A controlled facet topology, defined by Argon ion beams etching, and a calibrated passivation coating will optimise transmission. Studied will be the effect of phosphor facet topology and passivation thickness on optical outcoupling. the deposition of a sacrificial mask, necessary for ion beam etching, ion beam etching and passivation definition will occur at the Central Microstructures Facility. Platinum coated micro-mirror based layers will be defined by subcontract to the National Microelectronics Research Centre, Cork. the metalised mirror surface will increase the reflection of the laterally emitted light. Fabricated devices will undergo lifetest to determine the effectiveness of the passivation for devices operated in atmospheric conditions. CAA approved environmental temperature test will be undertaken at Avimo Ltd. for device qualification.
