Summary on Grant Application Form
A system for the analysis of photocapsular images, which utilises a local measure of texture and co-occurrence mapping to determine the amount of opacification present, has been developed in collaboration with St. Thomas' hospital. It will be used in a comparative study of the effect of different lens types upon post-operative opacifications by studying patients over a three-year period from hospitals in Holland, Germany and England. The generality and robustness of the algorithms will be enhanced by incorporating a radial basis function neural net to classify different types of opacification such as diffuse or fibrosal. The data will then be utilised in the formulation and testing of models of cell growth on the anterior and posterior capsules since such cell growth is though to be the origin of opacification. The models will utilise a cellular representation of the capsules with growth taking place at the free edge. They will incorporate tensile forces, so that the withdrawal of the anterior capsule from the lens may be replicated. The morphology and growth rates predicted by the models will be compared with the experimental data.
