This project aims to build on recent developments in linear elastic fracture mechanics to create a library (or knowledge base) and associated mapping model for stress intensity factors. Recent research by the proposer has demonstrated that by expressing srtess intensity factors in terms of geometry weight functions, geometric influences can be isolated and combined. A mapping procedure could use constituent stress intensity factor solutions for geomteric features to construct stress intensity factor solutions for complex three dimensional engineering components. This would enable the quick accurate assessment of the significance of detected defects i.e. a dependable and quantifiable determination of the remaining life of a cracked component. Such a tool has the potential to revolutionise in-service fitness-for-purpose assessment having obvious consequences for safey and leading to optimum operational limits of engineering structural components.
