Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks to continue and improve magneto-optical experiments, pioneered in Oxford under previous EPSRC grants, for characterising the many-body effects which occur in correlated electron systems. The programme involves the extension of an existing tuneable millimetre-wave source (30-200 Ghz) so that cyclotron resonance and ESR/EPR are possible at frequencies of up to 820 Ghz and the development of (magneto-) optical measurements at high hydrostatic pressures. These techniques will be applied to charge-transfer salts (organic narrow bandwidth metallic systems), heavy fermion systems and conducting oxides exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance. Particular areas of interest include the comparison of quasiparticle dynamical masses deduced from cyclotron resonance with effective masses obtained from the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects as a gauge of the strength of many-body effects: the observation of phenomena in the high frequency conductivity of the materials and the identification of such features with e.g. effective Coulomb correlation energies; the use of pressure and magnetic field to drive the compounds under study between different phases.
