This project involves the synthesis and characterisation of several secondary dialkylammonium salts, together with oligomeric and polymeric materials containing dialkylammonium units in the polymer backbone. Of particular interest will be the synthesis of secondary dialkylammonium units wherein the ammonium centre is sandwiched by recognition motifs, such as carboxylic acids which should enable the ammonium salts to form long one-dimensional strands, held together by hydrogen bonding interactions. The synthesis of tetrabenzo-24-crown-8 macrocycles with varying degrees of alkyl substitution will be undertaken. These building blocks will be used to self-assemble [2]pseudorotaxanes and polypseudorotaxanes, in solution and in the solid state. The solution state aggregation properties of these superstructures will be investigated by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopies and by mass spectrometry in the gas-phase, whilst the solid state properties will be probed by X-ray crystallography. The thermal properties will be investigated by polarising microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry to establish if the materials possess any liquid crystalline properties. Long cavities, formed by stacking the crown ethers one on top of the other, will allow the secondary dialkylammonium units to thread through the cavities - much like an electrical wire insulated by its plastic mantle - resulting in novel supramolecular structures.
