Summary on Grant Application Form
A new type of circulator (3- or 4-port) based on ferrite-coupled lines has been developed in the Group. These 'lines' can be stripline, microstrip, slotline or coplanar waveguide. These FCL circulators have the advantage that they avoid the need for costly 'drop-in' technology; the ferrite and dielectric layers can simply be placed on top of each other, and the in-plane magnetic bias field is small even at millimetric wavelengths. Using soft substrates, ferrite slabs, and a purpose-built solenoid, 3-port and 4-port (proof-of-principle) circulators have been built for 7.4 GHz. The proposed research will investigate novel miniaturisation techniques for use at 10 GHz, permanent-magnet biasing, power handling limitations, and manufacturing techniques.
