Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to establish a high performance, high resolution UK facility for SR angle-resolved photoemission at the CLRC Daresbury Laboratory. This will incorporate high throughput MCD detection for the first time in a large mean radius rotatable analyser, providing a factor of 20 increase in detection efficiency over existing angle-resolving facilities. The novel nature of the fast parallel readout system will accommodate the full range of count rates generated in surface science experiments. This will provide a general user facility based at DL which will be highly competitive on an international scale. The system will be developed as part of a three-way partnership between VG Microtech, UMIST and DL. Used in combination with recently funded high resolution VUV beamlines at DL, it will deliver a routinely attainable overall (analyser + monochromator) resolution of <15 meV, with variable angular acceptance at viable count rates. This will enable new science in the areas of accurate Fermi surface mapping and chemical speciation of dilute band gap states in complex materials. The science enabled is highly multidisciplinary in nature, with academic and industrial beneficiaries in a number of areas of chemistry, physics and materials science.
