Summary on Grant Application Form
Research of a previous EPSRC project (GR/H86905) demonstrated reverse engineering of solid shapes bounded by analytic surfaces. That research demonstrated that there seems to be a limit to the accuracy of reconstruction achievable with current sensors, that reconstruction of manufactured features is problematic and many manufactured objects have free-form attached to analytic surfaces. This project will investigate how one can exploit general knowledge of manufactured parts (eg, a catalogue of parameterised standard features), plus hints by a used (eg, identifying that two nearly aligned features are truly aligned) to semi-automatically reverse engineer more complex manufactured parts.
