Summary on Grant Application Form
We will establish a new low temperature facility at Royal Holloway for experiments in the range 100?K to 1K, for research on new techniques using DC SQUIDS, in particular absolute noise thermometry and NMR. Preliminary work at Royal Holloway, down to 1.2K, has demonstrated that a fast and accurate absolute thermometer is realisable, based on current sensing noise thermometry using DC SQUIDs now available. To establish this thermometer would have a major impact on thermometry in this temperature range and requires a careful comparison with other thermometers (specifically the 3He mething curve scale) to below 1mK, which we will undertake. These techniques offer the prospect of absolute thermometry in high magnetic fields, and this will be tested experimentally up to 8T. The facility will offer a platform for further research on SQUID NMR techniques and their application to fundamental problems in the low mK range.
