Summary on Grant Application Form
A grant is requested for a field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy with secondary electron and back-scattered electron detectors, and for consumables and staff costs over a three year period. This microscope is required in order to maintain the high quality of research at the Manchester Materials Science Centre into the next decade. this type of microscope is necessary because of the pressing need in the Centre for high resolution scanning electron microscopy of bulk samples, particularly for the voltage microscopy of non-conductive materials. The Microscope will contribute to research in all materials science areas. The existing microscopes are not adequate for current or projected research.
