Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project seeks to develop the crack compliance technique for the measurement of residual stresses to a point where it provides an attractive alternative to established techniques such as hole-drilling or neutron and X-ray diffraction. Specific attention will be given to employing dislocation density analysis in order to provide on-line calculation of stress profiles. The results obtained will be compared to those obtained by X-ray and neutron diffraction to increase user confidence in the method. Attention will be given to producing an integrated demonstration system involving an Electric-Discharge Machine under computer control, with automatic data acquisition and analysis. The finite element method will be employed to extend the range of geometries which may be analysed. The feasibility of employing thumbnail cracks to provide a more localised measurement of stress will also be investigated.
