|
The proposal concerns the design and implementation of a framework for distributed collaborative working and group interaction. The motivation is to address the issues of support for group formation and interaction, shared resource management and privacy. We propose to utilise a `rooms' metaphor to address these issues. `Rooms' are persistent working spaces for groups of collaborating users. They are units of focus on related tasks, and units of resource management. Users may access rooms through links on World Wide Web pages, and they may navigate between them. In rooms users can share applications and information objects such as documents, multimedia presentations and whiteboards. Users also share tools for awareness of and communication with other users in the room.The project aims to go beyond existing work by defining a general model and architecture as a framework for room-based interaction and collaboration. Its research goals are to develop a model for efficient utilisation of rooms by groups, to evaluate the model and investigate the feasibility of fully implementing it. This will be achieved by constructing a prototype implementation, integrating existing software and techniques, and by measuring and evaluating its performance and functionality. Conclusions will be drawn about the scalability of the underlying architecture to many users and rooms; the prospects for fully integrating multimedia data; and the suitability of the infrastructure for adding new types of room, interactive object and application.
