The proposed project aims to integrate the product development and process planning considerations involved during the combined and synchronous assessment of product characteristics, manufacturing methods, production machines and factory configurations. The novelty of the research is due to: the application of aggregate planning at the early stages of design by using aggregate process models, and the creation of a dynamic, bi-directional link between the product, the processes and the factory. The research will result in the creation of a methodology and a quantitative computer based tool which will consist of generic aggregate process models for machining and welding and a route generator. The main functionality will be to rapidly convert a product structure into processing requirement and production routes. This will allow the evaluation of the manufacturing implications of varying products and alternative processes and factory layouts. The project is particularly relevant to small batch manufacturing environments with medium to high product variety. The industrial applicability of the new methods and computer based models will be demonstrated by creating and testing a computer based system for the integrated planning of machining and welding in a complex engineering environment with small batches and medium product variety.
