This project will study the physical properties of sediment on the outer Wesr Shetland Shelf (WSS) and adjacent upper slope, It aims to identify spatial patterms in these properties and to relate them to past and present processes of deposition. The outcome will be an integrated model, based on existing seismic facies/sequence model, which will have predictive value and will be validated by reference in analogous areas. The project will use core material and seismic data supplied by the BGS and will employ a range of sedimentological, acoustic and geotechnical techniques, including digital electron microscopy and engineering facies analysis. Additional geotechnical data will be supplied by BP Ltd. Key objectives will be the determination of void index profiles, the quantification of structural state and the relation of these seismic character and to past and present geological processes.
