Summary on Grant Application Form
We have shown that hypervalent iodoarene difluorides are readily prepared and display a great affinity for nucleophilic sulfur. These reagents and inexpensive equivalents such as N-iodosuccinimide and pyridine HF will be used to transform xanthates and thiono-phosphinates into fluorides, thioncarbonates into vicinal fluorohydrins and dithiorthoesters into gem difluoroalkyl ethers. The ability of iodoarene difluorides to function as reagents for pretense electrophilic fluorination will also be tested with silyl ester enolates and nitronates.
